    SCV Outdoor Report: River Walk

    Last week I went for a walk along the river.  It was a lovely day for walking - plenty of sunshine - and neither too hot nor too cold.  The embankment was lined by a graceful arch of trees.  I noticed the patchy grey, flaking tree bark and decided these were sycamore trees.

    Tempered Steel Veterans To Speak At Gelig Fundraiser Luncheon

    geligarmyThe Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce and Tempered Steel, a nonprofit organization that supports returning Iran and Afghanistan war veterans, will host a luncheon Thursday, Nov. 3, to raise funds for the Sgt. Ian Gelig Memorial Scholarship, which aids military veterans and their immediate family members.

     

    The luncheon will be held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Valencia from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $35.

    City Council Honors KHTS And The Gas Company For SCV Habitat Homes For Heroes

    Jack Oakie Film Series Set November 1, Scholarship Applications Available

    oakie-jackCollege of the Canyons will host its annual Jack Oakie Film Series designed to celebrate the artistic achievements of Jack and Victoria Oakie, while assisting students interested in applying for a prestigious Oakie scholarship award.

    The 2011 installment of the Jack Oakie Film Series will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the College of the Canyons cinema room, Hasley Hall, Room 101, located on the college’s Valencia campus.

    Ducks Dash For Dixon Docs

    Thousands of yellow rubber ducks sporting sunglasses raced across Castaic Lake on Saturday, raising more than $30,000 to help provide healthcare for the needy in the Santa Clarita Valley.

     

    Supporters, competitors and fun-seekers gathered along the banks of Castaic Lake for the 9th annual Rubber Ducky Festival as more than 4,000 ducks were dumped into the lower lagoon.

    Single Mothers Looking For Adopt A Family Donors

    Last year, more than 200 families were adopted in the Santa Clarita Valley.

    City Puts Its Sole Into Charity Partnership

    USETHISCITYSEALThe City of Santa Clarita is teaming up with the non-profit agency Soles4Souls Inc. in November to collect and distribute shoes for the Santa Clarita Winter Shelter and Single Mother’s Outreach.

     

    For the month of November, residents are invited to drop off new or “gently worn” shoes at any of the City of Santa Clarita designated sites, which include:

    Saugus Girls Volleyball Team Sweeps Canyon

    khts_sportsIt’s been almost a decade, but the Saugus girls volleyball team is back on top of the Foothill League.

    Saugus swept Canyon in three games to stay undefeated in league play and clinched at least a share of the its first league title since 2001.

    Sarah Blomgren had 11 kills and Ashley Guthrie recorded 31 assists for Saugus.

    October 25, 2011: Kings Win Streak Ends, Lose To Devils 3-0

    In a game heard live on KHTS, the Kings were shut out by the New Jersey Devils Tuesday night, by a final score of 3-0. The Devils scored all of their goals over the span of about 5 minutes in the 2nd period.
