Californians Get Ready For 'ShakeOut' Quake Drill Oct. 20

1004_news_shakeout_copyMore than 8 million Californians, including nearly 3 million in Los Angeles County, will test their preparedness for a major earthquake in the 2011 Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill at or near 10:20 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, according to the Earthquake Country Alliance, made up of public and private agencies throughout the state.

Skies will be mostly sunny with a high near 69 this afternoon, with a 20 percent chance of showers, the service predicts. There will be south-southwest wind between 10 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

khts_sportsGolden Valley’s Chelsey Totten won the 45th annual Staub-Barnes Invitational Division 1 girls cross country race at Crescenta Valley Park.

Totten led a group of five girls from the Santa Clarita Valley in the top 10 at the meet. West Ranch’s Ashley Welker finished third, Canyon’s Madison Hills was fourth, Golden Valley’s Abby Buckhoff was seventh and West Ranch’s Samantha Phillips was eighth.
