Family Fun At Bow-Wows And Meows

Hart Park on Sunday, October 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the 11th Annual Bow-Wows and Meows Pet Fair.  The free event will feature an exciting lineup of entertainment, pet-related vendors, and adoptable dogs and cats from Los Angeles County shelters.

How much is Santa Clarita worth?

Its people are priceless, of course. But all of the property within the city of Santa Clarita is now worth precisely $21.165 billion, according to new data from the Los Angeles County assessor’s office.

That makes it Los Angeles County’s eighth most “valuable” city.

State Schools Chief Asks For Relief From No Child Left Behind

tt-smallState Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson today called on U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to provide state schools with immediate relief from the flawed policies of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act.

“Relief is needed immediately before more schools suffer for another school year under inappropriate labels and ineffective interventions,” Torlakson wrote in a letter to Duncan.

The Master's College Women's Soccer Team Shuts Out William Jessup

khts_sportsThe Master’s College women’s soccer team shut out William Jessup University, 3-0, and won their second game in a row.

The Master’s College, ranked No. 9 in the NAIA, scored all three goals in the second half. Jasmine Benson scored the first goal. Kayla Gale, who played on the Santa Clarita Christian soccer team, scored the first goal of her college career.

Freshman Sara Hall wrapped up the scoring with the third goal for The Master’s College.

UPDATED: Newhall Jail Owner Faces Criminal Charges For Demolition By Neglect

UPDATED 1:31 p.m. Wednesday

Manny Santana and Santa Clarita city officials agreed Wednesday to resolve their differences over the historic Newhall Jail building, which Santana owns.

The verbal commitment came outside of the Santa Clarita Municipal Court room where Santana, 60, was set to be arraigned on 11 counts stemming from his alleged refusal to comply with orders to maintain his property.

Historic Designation Not What Owners Seem To Want

Newhall_Station_1926Historic preservation seems to be a priority for the city, but not so much for the people who own some of the structures on a severely cut-back list of homes and businesses selected for historic designation by the Santa Clarita City Council.

Council Member Frank Ferry asked City Staff for a rundown of how the owners of the pared down list of nine properties felt about the designation.

Canyon Country Ex-Con Suspected Of Murder, Charged With Assault On Peace Officer

brent_zubek_lapdA former Canyon Country resident and murder suspect, wounded by police during an early morning shootout in Encino Monday, was charged today with multiple counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer and other charges.



However, prosecutors said they were not charging Brent Darrin Zubek, 43, with murder, yet, because the investigation is ongoing into the Aug. 12 discovery of two bodies found dumped in Chatsworth.

Heat Advisory In Effect, Take Precautions For Elderly, Young And Pets

The National Weather Service says that a dominant high pressure system will continue hot temperatures, with the peak of the heat wave Thursday or Friday and the hot temperatures persisting through the weekend.

Santa Clarita Kidnapped And Held For Ransom

city_council_8_23_photoGovernor Jerry Brown could be wearing one of those old-fashioned bandit masks while brandishing a gun.

He has taken the City of Santa Clarita hostage, according to City Manager Ken Pulskamp, and he’s holding it for a ransom of $750,000.

At Tuesday night’s city council meeting, Pulskamp decribed two bill signed by Brown in June of this year:
