State Controller Holds Legislator Pay

bannerBudget2011-12_copyCalifornia legislators are now working without pay, after State Controller John Chiang determined that the budget presented by the deadline set by voters and vetoed by Governor Brown June 16, was incomplete and not balanced.


His analysis sought to determine whether the budget met the requirements of Proposition 25 and Proposition 58, which forfeit Legislative pay if a balanced budget is not passed by June 15.

Hams Go To The Mountain For Communications Drill

Radio_Relay_5Amateur radio operators from across the country – known as “Hams” – will be banding together this weekend to test their level of emergency preparedness in the event of a disaster.


The local Santa Clarita Amateur Radio Club will be broadcasting from the Castaic Lake Water Agency, Water Treatment Plant Conservatory above Central Park, with generators and less than 12 gallons of fuel.

WildGatorGuysTwo self-professed “animal geeks,” David Riherd and Paul Hahn, have been teachers since they were young. Hahn used to hold classes with his friends outdoors teaching them about the animal of the day with the flashcards his mother gave him. When Riherd was in college, he started teaching elementary science classes.



Squirrel Meets Flashy Ending, Takes Out Power In Newhall

Power-line-News_copyPower was knocked out in Newhall by an errant squirrel who got into an electrical box, causing an arc and darkening more than 2,800 customers' homes and businesses near Valley Street and Lyons Avenue.


The initial "explosion" - caused by the arcing power - happened at 7:10 a.m., according to an Edison spokesman.

Valencia's Balta, Williams, Hart's Glasnow Earn All-CIF Honors

khts_sportsValencia’s AJ Balta and Trey Williams earned spots on the All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 baseball team as selected by the Southern Section Coaches’ Association.

Balta hit .425 and led the Vikings with 11 home runs in his sophomore season. Williams, a junior, hit .345 with nine home runs and 20 RBIs.

Hart’s Tyler Glasnow was also selected to the All-CIF baseball first team.

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw delivered his third career complete game shut out in a terrific performance. He also managed 11 strike outs.

Final score: Los Angeles Dodgers-4, Detroit Tigers-0

Liberty Belle Jump Just One Of Many Thrills For Local Stuntman

DadAndHabInsideBelleFollowing the crash of the World War II era B-17 bomber – the Liberty Belle – last week, Jeff Habberstad – a stunt and second unit coordinator for movies and television shows – released several photos to KHTS capturing the jump he made with his father John out of the bomb bay doors of the Flying Fortress.

The jump was made three years ago over Gardiner Airport in New York while Habberstad was shooting “The Last Airbender” in Philadelphia.
