    California Republicans To Convene In Valencia Jan. 28

    Republican_iconPreparations are underway for the 2011 California Congress of Republicans convention, scheduled January 28-30 at the Embassy Suites in Valencia.

    Delegates will gather to strategize and guests are invited to observe the process at this annual meeting.

    Local Expert Frank Rock To Reprise Tour Of St. Francis Dam Site

    As they have done for the last several years, the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society will host a tour of the site of the St. Francis Dam Disaster in San Francisquito Canyon on Sunday, March 13 as a fundraiser for the Society.

     

     

    Runner To Receive Key To The City

    On Tuesday, January 25 at its regular meeting, the City Council will present former Senator George Runner with a Key to the City for his past service in California’s 17th District, which includes Santa Clarita.  

    Runner vacated his Senate seat late last year after winning the November election to join the state’s Board of Equalization.

    No one is ever ready for a tragedy. You may have an earthquake kit at home or insurance for your house but when tragedy strikes no one is prepared.

    The city of Tucson was not ready for such a riveting event as that which occurred on Saturday, January 8. That is not to say that the first responders were not prepared because they more than fulfilled their duties on what began as a normal start to the weekend.

     

    Santa Clarita Christian Boys Basketball Team Blows First-Half Lead Against Milken

    khts_sportsThe Santa Clarita Christian boys and girls basketball teams came away with losses to Milken last night.

    The boys lost, 64-57, after building a nine-point lead midway through the game. Tikko Moore scored a team-high 15 points and had 12 rebounds for Santa Clarita Christian.

    Luke Asher matched Moore with 15 points and Bret Ranhofer scored 13 for Santa Clarita Christian.

    Stephens Given 17 To Life For Murder Of Josh Pipho

    joshpipho2Michael Dean Stephens was sentenced to 17 years to life today for the murder of Josh Pipho (picture, right) during a November 2007 altercation in Stevenson Ranch.

    The sentence was handed down in San Fernando Superior Court this morning. Stephens was convicted November 9, 2010, of second degree murder with special allegations of using a deadly weapon(s).

    January 20, 2011 Kings Shutdown By Coyotes 2-0

    Thursday, the Kings welcomed Phoenix to the Staples Center. L.A. was unable to score with the Coyotes in the 2nd period taking advantage of a powerplay scoring 2 goals just 57 seconds apart to shutout the Kings 2 to 0.

    McAmis' Arraignment Continued, Ekelund Memorial Set

    christopher-mcamisThe arraignment of Christopher McAmis, accused of killing Lynsie Ekelund in 2001 and burying her body on the grounds at LARC Ranch in Saugus, has been put off again by the Superior Court.

    McAmis, who remains in custody on a no-bail hold at Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles, will return to court on March 22.

    Throw On Your Beads For Our Local Heroes

    khts_inthecommunity2The Domestic Violence Center of the Santa Clarita Valley will hold its inaugural Mardi Gras Gala on Saturday, March 19 at the Elks Lodge at 17766 Sierra Highway. The Gala will honor Assemblyman Cameron Smyth with the “Keith Richman Humanitarian Award” and local attorney and Agency volunteer Hunt Braly with the “Above and Beyond Award.” Assemblyman Smyth and Councilmember Laurene Weste are serving as Co-Chairs of the event.

    UPDATED: Power Now Restored In Sand Canyon

    Sand_Canyon_OutageUPDATED: 5:44 p.m. Power has now been restored to the area.

    High winds took down a power pole just before 6 a.m., knocking out power for 408 homes in the Sand Canyon area, but crews have been able to turn the lights back on for the majority of customers affected.
