Empowerment Luncheon Hosted By Betty Ferguson

The Betty Ferguson Foundation (BFF) has Sheri Varela of “Sheri Baby T-Shirts” as guest speaker for their monthly “Lunch & Learn” program on Tuesday, August 5, at noon. The “Lunch & Learn” program is presented by the BFF and the Women Entrepreneurs of SCV, an affiliated group of the Association of Women Entrepreneurs (WE).

Sheri Varela is the proud owner of her own company, called Sheri Baby.

She earns a living while having fun designing what she calls “self-esteem” or “remind-her” t-shirts with positive words and fun designs.

July 4: Dodgers Win! 3-1

Matt Kemp's two run 7th inning homer made the difference as the Dodgers defeated the Diamondbacks, 3-1.

Dodgers and Yankees Renew Historical Rivalry

dodgerlegend_programThere are many great rivalries in sports: Lakers/Celtics, Eagles/Cowboys, USC/UCLA, UNC/Duke, and of course, Dodgers/Yankees.  

The teams’ heated past started at the 1941 World Series when Dodger catcher Mickey Owen dropped a third strike, beginning a Yankees rally that could not be beaten. The Yankees took the first Series 4-1.  

July 3: Dodgers Win! 14-1

The Dodgers held a virtual batting clinic and the Diamondbacks committed 6 errors. Final score: Los Angeles 14, Arizona 1.

Newhall Family Foundation Funds Future Scholars

NewhallFoundationCheckNewhall family members were on hand to witness the launch of the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation Endowed Scholarship Fund at College of the Canyons Wednesday night.

Tony Newhall presented a $50,000 grant check to COC Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook, who accepted the check with help from COC Foundation President Jill Mellady and Murray Wood, the Foundation’s chief development officer.

Missing Santa Monica Senior Subject Of Massive Search

khts_crime_genericA 77-year old man from Santa Monica is the subject of a massive search and rescue effort underway in the Warm Springs area near Lake Hughes Road.

Lt. Mark Hershey said that the man is a resident of Santa Monica and that his wife reported him missing on June 29. He left their home on the 28th, and his car was found in the Warm Springs area on Friday night. He is described as being in pretty good shape and a regular hiker.


Cell Phone Law Rings In Two-Year Anniversary

khts_crime_chpAlthough Californian’s hands-free law went into effect two years ago, statistics indicate far too many motorists are still not dialed-in to the rules and are either being cited or becoming grim statistics.

“Many people were accustomed to using cell phones while driving before the law took effect, and it may now be difficult for some people to change this practice,” said Commissioner Joe Farrow.

Safety On the Waterways A Good Goal

boatingBoating accidents during the three summer holiday weekends represent between 15 to 20 percent of all accidents in a given year. This year five fatalities occurred during the week leading up to Memorial Day weekend. With the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, the Department of Boating and Waterways (DBW) urges boaters to boat safely.
