Dodger Of The Month: Rafael Furcal

Rafael_FurcalRafael Furcal, shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers, was born on Oct. 24, 1977, in Loma de Cabrera, Dominican Republic.

The 32-year-old Furcal attended Jose Cabrera High School and in 1996 he signed with the Atlanta Braves as an undrafted free agent. He was assigned to Gulf Coast Braves to play second base.

USL W-League Women's Soccer Championship Weekend Begins Tonight

khts_sportsThe start of a championship weekend begins today in the United Soccer League W-League. The semifinals of the W-League playoffs bring a doubeheader of games to Canyon High School.

The Atlanta Silverbacks, the champions of the Eastern Conference of the W-League, plays the Buffalo Flash, winners of the Central Conference, in the first semifinal at 5 p.m.

Power Outage In Canyon Country


At 10:02 this morning, an underground cable failed in Canyon Country affecting 1640 customers.  Power was quickly restored. Southern California Edison reports that the Mitchell Eagles After School Club is the only building currently without power.

Sanitation Board Holds Off On Controversial Rate Increase

7_27_TeaParty_WD__0085On Tuesday night, the Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District Board concluded their public hearing on the wastewater rate increase by holding off on the vote until spring.

The public hearing attracted many who protested the sewer rate increase. Nearly 25 concerned members of our community attended the Tea Party protest that preceded the meeting, holding up signs saying "Stop sanitation fee hike".

Third Gang Member Arrested For June 10 Robbery

khts_crimeA third suspect in a June 10 armed robbery has been arrested while he tried to settle a traffic ticket.

Det. Mark Barretto was in court for the arraignment of suspect Ruben Gutierrez, a suspect arrested July 23 for his participation in the holdup. He was approached by an individual at court who told him that Pedro Antonio Leon, 18, who was also being sought in the investigation, was at a window in the traffic section of the courtroom.

When Chris Spicker gets up early on Saturday mornings and heads off on a five hour, 70 mile bike ride, he’s thinking about one person: his older brother, Karl.  Karl has Multiple Sclerosis, and Chris is just one of the Spicker family members who will be participating in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Bike MS: Pedal to the Point event in Middleburg Heights, Ohio.
