UPDATED: Brush Fire Reported In Acton Knocked Down

A small brush fire was reported near County Fire Station 80 in Acton and firefighters have knocked down the blaze after it burned just short of one hour.

Firefighters report that the fire consumed just short of five acres of medium brush, stopping at a ridge line in the area.  The fire burned near Camp 11 and was fought by both Los Angeles County Fire units and those from Angeles National Forest.

Deputy Gets Unexpected Response From Suspect


A sheriff's deputy making a routine traffic stop near the Super Walmart on Carl Boyer Drive ended up on the receiving end of swinging fists from an uncooperative driver Wednesday morning.

Two men driving a white Nissan pickup truck were pulled over shortly after 8 a.m. and the deputy had just asked the first suspect, who was driving the truck, to get out and sit in the patrol car. That's when things got nasty.

City To Help Fund Economic Development Corporation

Organization will seek to attract, expand local business.

Local businessmen applauded Tuesday night as the Santa Clarita City Council passed a measure that will help fund the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation (SCVEDC), a new entity seeking to retain and expand local business, as well as attract new enterprises. The city will cooperate with COC, the Chamber of Commerce, the Valley Industrial Association, and other key agencies through the SCVEDC to take a more focused and organized approach toward growing the local economy.

Biceps will bulge, tendons will tighten, and champions will be crowned this weekend as the SCV Youth Project hosts the 2nd Annual Pull for the Kids Arm Wrestling Challenge. Professionals, amateurs, and first-timers will converge on the Residence Inn on The Old Road November 14 for a wrist-warping tournament-style competition.


City Council Approves Arts Commission Nominations


The city council approved its nominations for the new Santa Clarita arts commission Tuesday night. The commission will seek to expand artistic opportunities and support local arts groups and artists.


The commission's meetings will be open to the public. Its members were chosen from a field of 16 applicants.


Valencia, West Ranch Girls Volleyball Teams Advance To Second Round Of CIF Playoffs

sportslocalThe Valencia girls volleyball team got a little more than they expected in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.

Valencia, the Foothill League champs, won its first-round match, but it took five games to polish off visiting Villa Park, the fourth-place team out of the Century League in Orange County.


Katie Hank had a team-high 26 kills and Carly Carapella had 46 assists for Valencia.

Man Stabbed Walking Near Canyon Country School


An 18-year old man was stabbed Friday afternoon by two men who approached him near Sierra Vista Junior High School.

Sgt. Darren Harris of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's station said that the victim was walking westbound on Stillmore Street approaching Camp Plenty Road when he was approached by two men he didn't know.


UPDATED: Body Found Near Freeway May Be Missing Girl

A body found near the junction of the eastbound 126 and the southbound I-5 may or may not be that of a missing Newhall woman, who was last seen getting off a bus in Castaic two weeks ago.
