High School Volleyball Teams Eliminated From CIF Playoffs

sportslocalThe CIF volleyball playoffs are over for the teams from the Santa Clarita Valley. The three remaining teams all lost their second round playoff matches on Thursday night.

The West Ranch girls volleyball team lost in four games to Marymount. West Ranch outside hitter Allison Summers had a team-high 16 kills and 13 digs in the Division I-A second round playoff match.


Liquor Store Robber Gets 12 Years In Prison


A Newhall resident plead to his second felony strike in Superior Court today and was sentenced to 12 years in state prison.

Oscar Omar Labra was arrested in September after he was recognized by the clerk of a Canyon Country liquor store he held up in January. He reportedly went into the store, pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money, then tried to leave the store with the currency.


Sierra Vista Teacher Wins Big

VillardeAwardA Canyon Country teacher was recognized Thursday afternoon by the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports.

George Velarde, a Physical Education teacher at Sierra Vista Junior High School, was honored as the statewide winner in the 2009 Spotlight Awards.

Advanced Bionics Merges With Sonova Holding

khts_businessnews3Valencia's Advanced Bionics, a leader in developing and producing cochlear implants has agreed to merge with Sonova Holding, a German company that is the world's largest provider of hearing systems. The merger will also partner Advanced Bionics with Phonak, a provider of micro hearing systems.  Both companies will remain independent divisions within the Sonova Group.



Flag Football Season Super Saturday Set

The City of Santa Clarita invites community members to attend Super Bowl Saturday- the culminating event for the City's 2009 Flag Football season. The event, held Saturday, November 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Central Park, will feature league championships games and the 1st Annual Coaches Game.

Santa Clarita Christian Football Team Opens CIF Playoffs Against Southlands Christian

sportslocalThe Santa Clarita Christian football team will play its first round playoff game at College of the Canyons on Saturday.

Santa Clarita Christian, the champions of the Heritage League and the reigning CIF Division I 8-man champions, open the playoffs against Southlands Christian of the Express League. Game time is at noon.
