City Won't Fund Convention Center Study Just Yet

City staff will revise language of study proposal.

 

The City of Santa Clarita will not contribute $10,000 towards a study that would have looked at the feasibility of a dedicated convention/conference center...at least not right now.

The City shelved the proposed study after public comment soured perceived support.

Road Projects On Soledad And McBean Postponed

Planned overnight work on Soledad Canyon Road and McBean Parkway will be postponed, as nighttime weather conditions are expected to create challenges for the project.

The work is part of the City's Asphalt Rehabilitation Project, which uses American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funds to mend local roads and make for a smoother ride.

Valencia Girls Volleyball Team Takes Over First Place in Foothill League

sportslocalThe Valencia High girls volleyball team took sole possession of first place in the Foothill League with a three-game sweep over Hart. Katie Hank led the way for Valencia with 21 kills and 10 digs.

Hart's Jennie Long had a team-high eight kills.

 

Valencia is 6-1 in league play, followed by Hart at 5-2.

 

UPDATED: Arrest Made In Stabbing Death

An arrest has been made in the stabbing death of a 34-year old transient near a homeless encampment in the wash near Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road.

Julian Gonzales, 40, of Canyon Country, was arrested Tuesday morning and has been booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.

Marketing Workshop Offered For Newhall Merchants

Film Incentives Bring Productions To Santa Clarita

filmscvTo combat film productions leaving the state of California, the California Film Commission began an incentive program in early 2009.

More than 30 film and TV productions are expected to shoot in the last quarter of 2009 with one staging in Santa Clarita.

A new television series called "Lawman," will begin production in late October. The Sony Pictures production is for the FX channel, and will portray Kentucky.

sportslocalThe Master's College men's soccer team needed overtime to win its game against Concordia in a match-up of NAIA top-25 teams.

Marcelo Silva scored the lone goal of the game and gave the 22nd-ranked Master's College a 1-0 over No. 18 Concordia. Silva scored on a header off a free kick from Jacob Marchesani in the 93rd minute.

Final Hart Board Candidate Forum Set Wednesday

Voters will have their last chance to grill the candidates for the William S. Hart High School District Board on Wednesday night at a forum hosted by a group of local Democratic organizations.

The forum will be held at 7 p.m. at Vincenzo's Pizza in Newhall and is sponsored by The Democratic Club of Santa Clarita Valley, the Democratic Alliance for Action and members of  the 37th and 38th Assembly District.
