New Event At Hart Park Invites Art, Music, Craft Participants

The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation and Friends of Hart park are looking for artists, crafters and musicians to participate in the inaugural new series, "Music 'n the Park" that will take place three Sundays in September in the picnic grounds of William S. Hart Park.

The event is free and will feature musicians of all genres, including salsa, meringue, Latin jazz, pop, rock, hip hop and karaoke, as well as several booths featuring local arts and craft items.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell is urging everyone to remember safety procedures when students return to school this fall to prevent and mitigate the spread of H1N1 and other influenza viruses.

 

City Council Returns From Vacation

The Santa Clarita City Council is easing its way back from a short summer vacation to a rather condensed agenda.

On the docket are a budget transfer of unexpended appropriations for the Redevelopment Agency, renewing the contract with Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to continue to provide law enforcement services, a tax-sharing resolution to cover areas outside the city limits that receive wastewater treatment service and hiring a firm to complete the environmental impact report for the Via Princessa continuation from Rainbow Glen Drive to Golden Valley Road.

Satellite Phone Company Teams With KHTS For SCV Communications Safety

Matt Randall of Bird in the Sky Satellite phone sales and rental will be donating a pair of iridium satellite phones to KHTS News to enhance the local radio station's ability to utilize reliable, immediate communications when cell and landline phones are down or overloaded.

The satellite phones will allow KHTS News staff to maintain communication with emergency personnel as they gather up-to-the moment news for the safety and protection of the residents and businesses of the Santa Clarita Valley.

RJ Johnson Wins Fifth NASCAR Super Trucks Race At Irwindale

news_sportsChalk up another win for Canyon Country's R.J. Johnson at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale. Johnson won the NASCAR Super Trucks race on Saturday night, a week after recording his first win in the new S2 stock car division at the track.

It was Johnson's fifth win in the Super Trucks and his sixth overall at Irwindale.

Runner Allyson Felix Adds Another Gold

AllysonFelix, who took home a gold medal yesterday in the women's 200 meter race at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, has won a second gold medal for the United States in the women's 4x400-meter relay.

Felix ran the second leg of the race while Sanya Richards, the 400-meter champion, finished it out with a time of 3 minutes and 17.83 seconds.

Jamaica took second with a time of 3:21.15 while Russia claimed the bronze in 3:21:64.

Four Arrested After Early Morning Burglary

khts_crime_genericSanta Clarita Sheriffs arrested four individuals for burglary Sunday morning in the Saugus area.
Three men and one minor were arrested on the 23900 block of Gilford Place in Saugus around 6 a.m. after someone spotted them breaking into a house.

Deputies found items believed to be stolen in a vehicle at the scene.

OutWest Brings The Wild West To Main Street

A new shop is preserving the culture of the old west.

OutWest, a new store and performance venue which reflects the spirit of the West, will have its grand opening from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 27.

The store is part of the dynamic renovation of Old Town Newhall and the Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce will officially cut the ribbon to the entrance of the store at 5:30.

OutWest is a western boutique that fuses western-style entertainment with western history and culture.
