Gang Member In Custody After Assault



A gang member released from jail yesterday went back into custody after beating up his brother’s girlfriend and firing a gun outside a residence on Chestnut Street in Newhall.

Filimon Ramirez, 22, was arrested shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he visited the woman and her daughter.

Wednesday Night Power Outages Affect 7,000 Customers


A large chunk of the Santa Clarita Valley lost power Wednesday night, the result of two Southern California Edison equipment malfunctions.

Roughly 5,600 customers experienced the power outage in Stevenson Ranch and Westridge between 9:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. According to Edison Spokeswoman Anna Frutos Sanchez, this was due to bad cable in the area, which caused several transformers to malfunction.

Murder-Suicide In Saugus

In what might have been a painful resolution of ongoing health problems, a Saugus man killed his wife as she lay in bed Thursday morning, then went to an adjoining bathroom and killed himself.

UPDATE: The couple were identified Monday by Coroner's officials as Racquel Christina Ruiz, 68, and John Joseph Ruiz, 75.

Lt. Dave Coleman of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said that the Santa Clarita Valley station received a rescue call shortly after 8 a.m. from one of the two health caregivers who heard the gunshots.



Power Restored In Stevenson Ranch

UPDATE: Wednesday, May 27th 10:50 p.m.

Edison reported a power outage Wednesday night that had 5,200 customers in the dark starting around 9:00 p.m.

The outage affected those north of Southern Oaks, south of Pico Canyon Road, west of the Old Road and east of Flemming St.

The cause was reported to be bad cable in the area. Crews on scene were able to restore power in the area by 10:45 p.m., according to Rudy Gonzales with Southern California Edison.

Elderly Man Dies In Vasquez Canyon Accident

An 85-year old man died Wednesday afternoon after his car left the roadway and flipped over several times, landing in a ravine in Vasquez Canyon.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Wellington Bargar, the man was driving a 2004 Ford Taurus westbound on Vasquez Canyon Road, 2 miles east of Bouquet Canyon Road at approximately 4:45 p.m. when he crossed the eastbound lane and ran off the road.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident, although Bargar said the vehicle kicked up a lot of debris that landed on a nearby car when he went off the road.

Caltrans Plans Weekend Freeway Closure



The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will conduct an extended closure this weekend on the westbound Foothill Freeway (I-210) connector to the northbound Golden State Freeway (I-5). The work is part of the I-5/Antelope Valley Freeway (SR-14) Direct HOV Connector Project.

The connector will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, May 29, until 5 a.m. Monday, June 1.

This closure is necessary to allow crews to replace and re-stripe the pavement.

Future Santa Clarita Courthouse Location Doubled By Council

The City of Santa Clarita has doubled its bid to bring a new courthouse to the area. In March the City Council committed a 3.5 acre land donation for the purposes of a new courthouse, however Tuesday, the Council amended the donation to include 3.5 additional acres for the legal center.

The City hopes to bring a new courthouse to the location, situated off of Golden Valley Road, and City staff has already begun pursuing a new Santa Clarita Judicial District.

Swine Flu Case Confirmed At Sierra Vista Junior High


The Wm. S. Hart Union High School District has received notice that a student at Sierra Vista Junior High School has a confirmed case of N1H1 influenza, and a message has been sent to all parents at the school notifying them that students who were absent due to illness on May 26 can expect a call from the Public Health Department.
