Pet Adoption Bill Passes Assembly Committee

Shelter animals got a little treat from Sacramento today when a bill by Assemblyman Cameron Smyth passed the Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee on Monday by a vote of 9-0.  AB 233 will provide a tax deduction to allow individuals to deduct up to $100 in adoption fees for animals adopted from local government and non-profit animal shelters.

 

 

Property Owners Encouraged To Protest Sewer Tax Hike

 

Residents concerned about a spike in their tax bills are being encouraged to write letters to those deciding the issue on May 26.

 

According to an e-mail from the Canyon Country Advisory Committee Members and Friends circulating on the internet, letters are the only avenue that might stop the hike in fees that the committee has dubbed “the largest single tax increase in the history of Santa Clarita”

"With every vote, we're expanding the base of support for AB 1463," said Smyth. "I'm pleased that so many of my colleagues, from both sides of the aisle, are coming together to recognize the sacrifice that our young men and women are making."

Community Supporter Ron Murphy Dies

 

Magic Maintenance owner Ronald Murphy died Wednesday after a long bout with cancer.

 

Murphy and his wife, Jeanie were both active as volunteers with local charities. Ron was an avid golfer and loved his family. He supported several community groups, including the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children’s Cancer, the SCV Boys and Girls Club and the HMNMH Foundation, along with several others.

 

How You Can Prepare For An Early Fire Season

The fire season seems to have gotten an early start in Southern California and the Angeles National Forest has raised its fire danger level to high.

This level change means that forest visitors need to be careful using open flames.

 

Controlled Burn Gets Out Of Control In Castaic

A controlled burn at Pitchess Detention Center near Castaic has been knocked down. The training exercise, a joint effort by Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, was under control until a gust of wind picked up a corner of the fire and prompted a full brush fire response, including air support from Los Angeles City. The fire flared around 1:30 p.m.

Stephanie English of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said that the fire, dubbed the Rancho Incident, burned 25 acres and firefighters have achieved knockdown.

Tuesday, residents in Santa Clarita and throughout California will have a big say in how government is run.

Propositions 1A-1F offer a host of actions that propose raising taxes, modernizing the lottery, reallocating funding and halting pay raises for legislators in budget deficit years. All propositions aim to help reign in the state budget, which is facing down yet another shortfall.

Crews Put Out Brush Fire Near Santa Clarita Studios

Around 11:00 a.m. Monday a brush fire burned about 1 acre of the hillside behind Anza Drive in Valencia.
Firefighters reported that the fire was held by ground units to one acre of light grass on the hill behind Santa Clarita Studios near the Valencia Industrial Center. The fire was out by 12:00 p.m.

At the time of the fire, the winds were blowing out of the south/southwest at 3 MPH.

No major roads were closed during the incident, however the flames were visible from the I-5 freeway near Magic Mountain Parkway.

Water Agencies Already Pulling From Reserves Amid Drought

With Santa Clarita and the rest of California in the middle of a drought period, the Castaic Lake Water Agency has had to dip into the reserves for the first time in several years.

There are four different water companies in Santa Clarita; Valencia Water, Newhall County Water Company, Santa Clarita Water and L.A. County Waterworks District #36. Castaic Lake Water Agency (CLWA) is the wholesaler that acquires and distributes the water to the local companies, who in turn deliver it to our faucets.

Hart, Saugus Start CIF Baseball Playoffs On Tuesday

 

Hart is in the CIF-Southern Section Division I playoffs. The fourth-place team in the Foothill League needed an at-large berth to make the postseason tournament. The Indians face Camarillo on the road in the wild-card round Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

Saugus, the third-place team in Foothill League, oddly enough has to play a wild-card game too. The Centurions are at home against Oxnard on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. Oxnard, from the Pacific View League, earned an at-large playoff bid.
