    Rio Norte JHS to Participate in National Anthem Day

    On September 14 at 9 am Jeff Gilbert, music director at Rio Norte Junior High School, will be leading the Rio Norte band as they celebrate National Anthem Day.  Over 1300 students will meet at the amphitheatre in the quad area to sing our National Anthem.

    Tom Veloz, Local Philanthropist, Passes Away

    We are deeply saddened to report that Tom Veloz has passed away today. Tom was the 1988 SCV Man of the Year and has served the Santa Clarita Valley for over 20 years.  He has served with the Red Cross, COC, Boys and girls club, Henry Mayo, and founded the Sheila R.

    Runner and COC President Urge Governor to Sign Community College Bill Package

    On Tuesday, Senator George Runner and College of the Canyons Superintendent-President Dr. Dianne Van Hook announced the passage of four important community college bills by the California State Legislature. During Tuesday’s announcement, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was urged to sign the legislation. 
     
    These bills will provide College of the Canyons with more equalization dollars, more access to students and eliminate bureaucratic barriers for community colleges to build and acquire much-needed classrooms and facilities.
     

    Dodgers Lose 9-8

    UPDATE! I-5 Lane Closures North and South

    A fast moving wildfire, which has burned over 19,000 acres north of Castaic near Pyramid Lake has once again forced lane closures on the I-5.
    As of 6 pm Tuesday, the following I-5 closures remains in effect: 
    • Northbound I-5 is closed at Parker Road.
    • Southbound I-5 is closed at Hwy 138. 
    Motorists traveling north can take the northbound 14 to the westbound 138 or the westbound 126 to the northbound 101.

    Lockheed Player of the Week

    Congratulations, Graham Wilbert of Valencia High School for being a “Player of the Week”.
     
    Wilbert, a Valencia High quarterback did outstanding work for the second consecutive week.  This past Friday, the junior led the Vikings to a 59-37 win over Bishop Amat.  Wilbert was an efficient 16-20 for 301 passing yards in the game, throwing five touchdowns.  His touchdown passes went for 12, 20, 24, 65, and 55 yards.
