Seniors Invited To Open House At Senior Center

SANTA CLARITA - College of the Canyons is encouraging senior citizens to attend an upcoming open house to learn more about the college and its personal-enrichment programs, as well as celebrate the lives of several seniors who participated in an oral history project. The second-annual open house and reception, hosted by ALIVE (Association for Lifelong Interest in Voluntary Education) and the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10 at the senior center, located at 22900 Market St. in Newhall.

Another mine in Santa Clarita

It has recently been discovered that Arizona-based Pacific Industrial Minerals plans to set up a 20-year mining project in Santa Clarita...

The 40-acre site is planned to be across from the currently proposed Cemex mine, near Agua Dulce Road and Soledad Canyon Road.  The new mining project calls for a 7-acre processing and stockpiling area, as well as a one-lane bridge across the river.

Lane Closures Continue for I-5 & 126

Santa Clarita – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close the following lanes of the Golden State Freeway (I-5) and State Route 126 as part of a $24-million project to improve the I-5/126 Interchange, from Monday, May 9 through Friday, May 13: INTERSTATE 5:

·     Daily from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

-     One lane of southbound I-5 from Hasley Canyon Road to Rye Canyon Road
-     One lane of northbound I-5 from Rye Canyon Road to Hasley Canyon Road


·     Daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

COC Recognizes Employees

SANTA CLARITA -- Employees at College of the Canyons were recognized for their contributions to the college at an awards luncheon held on Thursday, May 5, 2005. 

The outdoor luncheon was held with the "twist" that board members, administrators and managers served college "classified" employees a catered meal.

Crash Caused By Drowsiness

Canyon High student Melvin Beleno, 19, died last week in a car crash, as friends mourned his passing....

Linda Storli, one of Beleno's students, said she's known 21 students who have died in her 20 years of teaching.

Apparently, Beleno dozed off while driving and hit a light pole.
