STORM UPDATE: Grapevine Open, 14 Slow

California Highway Patrol officials reported to KHTS minutes ago that the Interstate 5 Freeway has been reopened at the Grapevine.

The 14 Freeway is seeing a lot of heavy traffic northbound from Sand Canyon Road into the Antelope Valley, the result of some traffic accidents along the 14, as well as traffic redirected from the closing of I-5. Updating on another story, local residents who were affected by a power outage in the North Park area of Valencia should have power restored completely this afternoon.

An earlier outage affected nearly 1,000 customers.

Let It Snow!

Our friends to the north in Antelope Valley are receiving sizable amounts of snow as a result of the powerful storm pushing its way through Los Angeles County Friday morning. Rain to Continue, Causes Power Outages

As of Friday morning at 10:30 a.m., rain continues to fall in the SCV, and is expected to continue throughout the day, with heavy downpours at times.  Rain is likely throughout the weekend and even into Monday, with snow possible at the higher elevations, and has even been reported in Palmdale and Lancaster.

Checkpoint Frustrates Drivers

Another Sheriff's checkpoint was set up Thursday to check drivers' licenses...

There have been several checkpoints set up in response  to the 25% increase in hit-and-run crashes over the last year.

Similar to sobriety checkpoints, these events haveoccurred during the day and therefore tend to frustrate drivers who don't expect the extra traffic congestion.

Local deputies plan to conduct more checkpoints, as they have proven successful so far.

More on this story can be found in today's Signal.

Construction crews cannot work on the roads while it is raining.  According to city officials though, the planning took the rainy season into account, and apparently the rains are not having an adverse effect on the scheduled completion.

The Cross Valley Connector will serve as an alternative to Soledad Canyon Road, running from the 5 to the 14 by the time it is done.

SCV Residents Feel Distant Earthquakes

A swarm of relatively mild earthquakes hit Southern California this morning, centered just north of Fontana, in San Bernardino County (commonly referred to as the Inland Empire), which was felt by some residents as far away as our Santa Clarita Valley....

KHTS received word of the temblors from at least one listener in Santa Clarita...

Woman Kidnapped but Escaped

A woman who was abducted on Tuesday in Hawthorne escaped from her kidnapper on Placerita Canyon Road near Sierra Highway....

Hawthorne Police are investigating the situation, after the woman was taken by local Sheriff's to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, seemingly unharmed.

Storms Bring Snow and Business to the SCV

The recent Southern California storms have not been all doom and gloom with rain, flooding, and closed roads, although SCV residents have had to deal with at least one of the above....

Because of the closure of the Golden State Freeway through the Grapevine over New Years' weekend, many Castaic eateries and hotels got huge jumps in business as stranded travellers spent the night.

Memorial Set for Murder Victim

The memorial service for Christopher Simons, the 24-yearo-old adult gift shop clerk who was shot and killed New Year's Day, has been set for this Thursday at 5 p.m. at Eternal Valley in Newhall, off the 14 at San Fernando Road.  The memorial service will be on Friday at noon at Grace Baptist Church in Saugus....

The Signal reports that Simons was always weary of his overnight work schedule.  Robert Wheeler, the 25-year-old man who allegedly killed Simons and shot and wounded two others, is still recovering at Henry Mayo hospital from his self-inflicted gunshot wound.
